FNB customers can buy five crypto assets from R10, but cannot withdraw them
FNB says customers using four of its investment products can buy Bitcoin and four other crypto assets from R10. The service is offered through FNB’s platform, with trading provided by VALR. Customers cannot transfer crypto into or out of the service.
- Available through: Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor and Share Zero
- Supported assets: Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and USDT
- Minimum investment: R10, according to FNB
- Trading availability: Advertised as 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- Key restriction: No deposits from other wallets or withdrawals to personal wallets
Purchases are funded from a customer’s FNB account, so there is no need to open a separate account with an exchange. The service is available through the four investment products listed above. FNB has not provided further details here about eligibility or whether the R10 minimum applies in exactly the same way to every asset and product.
Sizwe Nxedlana, CEO of FNB and RMB Private Banking and Wealth Management, said the service came in response to customer requests for more investment choices.
“FNB customers will now have access and exposure to crypto assets, with the ability to trade a set of curated coins, ” Nxedlana said.
Crypto exposure without the ability to move coins
Customers cannot deposit crypto they already own or withdraw crypto bought through the platform to a self-custody wallet, where they control the keys. In practice, they cannot spend or transfer these assets on-chain through FNB’s service.
FNB says the arrangement is “ringfenced within the FNB ecosystem” and points to security, compliance and South African exchange-control requirements. That is the bank’s stated rationale. The available information does not clarify whether the transfer restriction is legally required, a compliance choice or simply part of the product’s design.
The restriction comes with a real trade-off. Keeping purchases within an existing bank platform may suit customers who want crypto exposure alongside their share investments. But that is different from holding freely transferable coins in a wallet or an exchange account that allows withdrawals.
The available details do not say who controls the private keys, how the assets are held, what protections apply if a provider fails or how customers receive rand after selling. Customers should check FNB’s current terms before investing.
A R10 minimum makes it easy to get started, but it does not guarantee a meaningful holding or a low-cost trade. FNB has not specified fees or spreads in the information available here. Those charges could affect how much crypto a small purchase buys.
USDT, issued by Tether, is designed to track the U.S. dollar. It is not a bank deposit, and redemption is subject to Tether’s terms and eligibility requirements. Like other crypto assets, it carries risks that a dollar-tracking design does not eliminate.
A first step, with important details still missing
VALR provides the trading capabilities behind FNB’s service. Bheki Mkhize, CEO of FNB Wealth and Asset Management, said customer interest had been considerable and stressed the need to understand crypto’s volatility and risks.
“This is just a start, ” Mkhize said.
FNB plans to offer more investment choices and educational material in text, video and audio formats. The bank has not said which assets it might add or when. Customers should also review the current product terms for details on fees, custody, sale settlement and how 24/7 trading works.
The launch brings crypto access to investment products some FNB customers already use. That could make it easier to get started, but it does not remove market risk or give customers the control and portability that come with withdrawing coins to a wallet they manage.
